The 5 people theory is a way to periodically reflect on where you are at in life and what is currently important to you. It is also a great way to see where you want to be and what you want to accomplish. It does not have to be completely professional. There can be a mix of some personal goals as well. Listen as Patricia and John are joined by guests Blake Briggs and Chris Colbert to discuss the 5 people theory and how medical students can apply it.

- Parents
- Spouses
- Friends
- Mentors
- People that have had an impact on your life both personally and professionally.
- How to accomplish this:
- Multitask – call during a car ride or on a walk.
- Ex: John recommends the 8-minute phone call
- Schedule it in
- Ex: John recommends “Thank You Thursdays”

- Think BIG:
- These people can be anyone from famous people (like Michael Phelps) to someone local or in your field.
- Get involved.
- Network.
- Go to conferences.

- Make SMART goals:
- Be specific.
- Make sure they are measurable.
- Ensure they are achievable.
- They should be relevant.
- There should be a time limit to complete them.
