If you’ve ever spent time in an emergency room, you know it’s a place where the unexpected is the norm, and sometimes, the downright hilarious happens. In this episode, hosts Andy, Drew and Tanner shared some of their funniest stories involving kids, travel partners and feeling old; all based on a random set of questions.
Kids
From using Matrix reflexes (dad skills) to save a toddler from falling off a gurney head first, to kids saying the darndest things after coming out of procedural sedation and of course a poop story, the host have some of the best stories when it comes to taking care of kids in the ED.
Travel Partners
If you could travel with one character from a medical show or movie, who would it be? Despite Drew being a true disappointment panda and saying he really would just want to travel alone, he did eventually play along and say that he would want to travel with Dr. Gregory House. Of course, Noah Wyle, both as Dr. Robinivich from The Pitt and Carter from ER was a host favorite. Even Dr. Greene from ER got a mention.
Feeling Old
The conversation then shifted to what makes them feel old. Beyond the usual gray hairs and longer recovery times from injuries, the hosts shared some truly relatable moments:
- Kids growing up: Andy’s son graduating from high school and getting his mission call was a stark reminder of the passage of time.
- Outdated tech references: Explaining rotary phones and VCRs to kids who’ve only known smartphones and streaming services definitely hits different.
- ER pop culture references: Mentioning “The Rock” or “The Hunt for Red October” and getting blank stares from younger colleagues. “What’s a Rolodex?” one medical student asked after one of the hosts used the term to describe a “Rolodex of knowledge.” Ouch.
- Medical scoring systems: Realizing that the HEART score, once a “new study,” is now considered old, and that the TIMI score, a crucial part of their training, is now completely unheard of by new learners.
