For this episode, Drew leads a great discussion with all of our hosts about the recent Wall Street Journal Article, “Young Doctors Want Work-Life Balance. Older Doctors Say That’s Not the Job.” Many perspectives can be taken on the article, particularly when viewed from different lenses including community medicine, academia, and graduate medical education.

Some of the questions our hosts address:
  1. Is medicine a calling or a job? Can it be both?
  2. Does desiring a work-life balance make you less committed to your patients?
  3. How do we avoid burnout as medicine becomes more and more about the bottom line?
Take-Home Points:
  • It’s important to clinically operate at or a little below capacity to give yourself room to breathe when life circumstances change and extra bandwidth to help out your team when needed.
  • Taking care of yourself is a critical part of being a team player and caring for patients.
  • Your life will balance, but there is always an opportunity cost. The key is to adjust the variables that you can control to find a situation that is both reasonable and will give you longevity.

Listen in and see where the hosts stand.
