We’ve had an interesting last few years. Between COVID-19, the workforce study, and most recently, the 2022 match EM has been through a lot. Many of our colleagues have taken to the “sky is falling” mentality in addressing these events, and frankly, we’d like to change the narrative. Instead, we wanted to discuss the future of EM and how each of us may approach it by finding our niche and expanding that in our space.
For example, many of us are finding that we enjoy working in a specific area or with a certain patient population. We may be finding that we like the challenge of working in an inner city hospital or that we prefer the fast pace of a level one trauma center. Alternatively, some of us are realizing that we don’t want to work in a high-stress environment and are instead looking for opportunities in academic medicine or administrative roles. We may also want to sub specialize within EM by doing a fellowship, or jump to other specialities or practices.
No matter what our individual situation may be, we believe that each of us has the opportunity to find our niche and make a career beyond emergency medicine. So let’s stop worrying about the sky falling and start embracing the possibilities that lie ahead. Who knows, you might just find your dream job is your current job.
