Be A Sponge
Gordon Ramsey says that you should be the best listening device. How can you learn if you are in a room full of smart people, but you are the only one talking? How can you participate in a dialogue if you are not actively listening? Not only should you actively listen so that you can better participate in the conversation, but also because human beings love to share their stories. People feel valued when they feel heard. Be sure to listen with curiosity to invest more deeply in the conversation by asking thoughtful questions. Finally, Maya Angelou said it best, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Take It Professionally, Not Personally
Gordon Ramsey says that getting told off is good. Nobody is perfect, no matter how long we have gone to school or how long we have been in practice. It is important to have humility and be able to receive feedback constructively. Surround yourself with people who will keep you in check. Additionally, this concept can be employed when talking to consultants. Keeping your cool is the key to doing what is best for the patient, which should always be the focus.
Have Thick Skin
Gordon Ramsey says that you’re never going to please everyone. While this is an extension of keeping things professional and not making it personal, it is particularly important to have thick skin in this job because we have no control over the events that happen to us, but we do control how we respond. In emergency medicine, especially, it is incredibly important to be able to go from a patient encounter that was not ideal to delivering equally excellent care to the next patient, despite the previous interaction.
