You might have heard about some changes that are being recommended for EM residency training. Ever wonder where those recommendations come from? In this episode, Kaitlin and Molly are joined by EM Over Easy host Andy to discuss the Residency Review Committee (RRC) and what medical students should know about the new recommendations.

What is the RRC?

The RRC is the Residency Review Committee. It is comprised of a group of current and former educators, several of whom have served or are serving as program directors, designated institutional official (DIO), etc. The ACGME requires that every specialty have its own RRC that is tasked with reviewing the training requirements of the specialty and determining if changes need to be made to keep up with the ever-changing medical field. They assess where we are now as a specialty, where we need to be in the next several years, and how we are going to get there.

What are some of the changes they are recommending?

The RRC is recommending some additions to the curricular building blocks, including practicing in low resource areas, increasing pediatric practice hours, and increasing exposure/experience in other areas like tox, admin, etc. Additionally, they are recommending increases in certain procedural numbers that have not been updated in several years.

What’s next?

Initial recommendations were released earlier this year. A public open comment period was opened until May. The committee is now reviewing all of those comments before releasing final recommendations. The anticipated final recommendations will likely be released sometime between August and November.

Take-Home Points:
  • The RRC is a group of current and former educators tasked with reviewing the training requirements of the specialty and determining if changes need to be made to keep up with the ever-changing medical field.
  • All of the recommendations come from a place of patient-centered care and optimizing residency education.
  • Keep an eye out for final recommendations, which will likely be released sometime between August and November.
