How are people typically motivated to improve? The three most common motivators are your supporters (family, friends, meteors, cheerleaders, etc.), yourself, and your haters. In this episode, our hosts discuss the topic of haters and how you can flip the script to change your mindset on how to view them in your life.

Have you ever experienced a time in your life when the things you have done and possibly the reason you’ve been successful were fueled by the haters?
  • Common examples:
    • Confrontational interactions with colleagues
    • Rivalries in sports
    • When someone exposes you publicly or tells you a truth you aren’t ready to accept.
    • People you want to be like the least often have a greater impact on who you become because you are motivated not to be like that person
What can we do to make the most of these experiences?
  • Talk to the person you have had a poor interaction with.
    • Sometimes confronting the person can bring clarity to the situation.
  • Being fueled entirely by the haters can only get you so far.
    • By turning the negative encounter or influence into a positive response you are focusing on the part that is within your control which will often sustain you longer than focusing on the negative.
  • Consider the source of the hate.
    • If the source isn’t credible it may be better to just let it go.
    • If there is some validity to the argument and you are fired up because you are mad at yourself or mad that you were exposed, you have to focus on not losing your cool and working through it.
  • Turning the scenario into a self-motivator will last much longer to motivate you than just focusing on the hate.
Take-Home Points:
  • Consider the source.
  • You can’t control what other people say, but you have full control over how you respond.
  • Self-motivation is much more sustainable than hate.
