If we’ve heard it once, we’ve heard it a thousand times. If you’re going to be in medicine, you’re going to have to be a “lifelong learner”. In this episode, Andy is joined by guests Blake Briggs, Drew Jones, and Ken Frye to discuss what it means to be a lifelong learner and how to approach lifelong learning in your career.
What is Lifelong Learning?
- Striving to be better each day, even if it’s just by a small margin
- Always being curious and seeking knowledge, both in and outside of medicine.
- Recognizing that medicine is ever-changing and that requires us to change with it by engaging with it outside of shift.
Practical Approaches to Lifelong Learning:
- Be intentional about your time, especially when you are off shift.
- Schedule time to learn.
- Maximize your time.
- The plane can be a great place to read and the car can be a great time to listen to podcasts.
- When working on scholarly activity (teaching residents, prepping podcast material, etc.), try to “double dip” and pick topics that you want to or need to learn more about.
- Be a sponge!
- Learn about the patients you take care of and the members on your team.
- Find resources that work for you.
- Journal Feed can give you snippets of recent journal articles.
- Choose two journals you want to keep up to date with.
